Fight over MJ's resting place

Despite their show of unity at Michael Jackson's memorial service this week, new reports claim that the Jackson family is bitterly divided over where they want the King of Pop to be buried.

According to a New York Post report, patriarch Joe Jackson and Michael's brother Jermaine want the late Jackson buried at Neverland Ranch, which would then be turned into a museum a la Graceland. However, Michael's mother Katherine and the rest of the family wants Jackson buried elsewhere, as he vowed to never return to Neverland following his child molestation acquittal in 2003.

"Jermaine is the one that wants him at Neverland -- he and Joseph -- because of the whole Elvis thing and the money potential ... They are seeing dollar signs," a Post source said.

So where is Jacksons gold-casket-enclosed body now? Reportedly in the above-ground crypt of Motown founder Berry Gordy at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The Post reports that Gordy, who discovered and coached the Jackson 5 to stardom, temporarily offered the Jacksons use of his mosaoleum until Michael's final resting place is decided upon.

The world got a glimpse of Jackson's ornate casket at the huge memorial service on July 7, and PEOPLE is reporting that beforehand, the Jackson Family was able to pay their respect for Michael Jackson one last time at an open casket viewing at Forest Lawn cemetery.
"He looked like himself. He looked like he just was laying there sleeping," David Fosset, a cousin of the King of Pop's, tells PEOPLE.

"He looked peaceful," Fosset added. "It was a somber mood. Even though he's this big entertainer, he's still our family."

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies who raided Michael Jackson's home in 2003 at Neverland Ranch had their hands full -- the place was a mess.

All these photos were taken inside the house, as deputies faced the daunting task of sifting through all of MJ's stuff.

The $400 Million Club

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossed over $200 million in its first week. Most box office analysts say that the film is well on pace to pass $400 million domestically - no small feat as only eight other movies have done so in the history of cinema.
What makes Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen so unique is that it would be the first film to reach that mark despite abysmal reviews that encouraged viewers to avoid the film. Sure, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace wasn't critically acclaimed, but it certainly fared far better with critics than Revenge of the Fallen.

According to Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount, critics "forget what the goal of the movie was. The goal of the movie was to entertain and have fun." Being entertaining and fun is a good goal for a blockbuster movie to have - it's the same goal that the producers of The Dark Knight and Spiderman had, but they decided to make their movie good on top of it.

Assuming Revenge of the Fallen does become the ninth member of the $400 million club, we thought it would be interesting to compare it to the first eight movies that passed that threshold. The graph below takes into account box office gross, widest theatrical releases, and Rotten Tomatoes rankings.

Movies That Told Critics To Suck It

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossed over $200 million in its first week. Currently, Transformers is on pace to becoming the first movie to reach $400 million domestically despite abysmal reviews, faring far worse with critics than even The Phantom Menace. This got us thinking: what other movies’ box office results have run against the tide of critics, defying the reviews/wisdom of the supposed arbiters of good cinema? The following graphic shows some of the most notable examples of when moviegoers told critics to “suck it.”

Italian scientists develop DustCart, an on-demand robot trash collector.

PECCIOLI, Italy — In this 8th century town, amid the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside, everyone talks trash. Even at the local restaurant, visitors chewing on roasted meat are asked for their thoughts on garbage.

Since the late 1980s, nothing has made Peccioli residents happier than collecting garbage. At that time, the small town built one of the most advanced dumping sites in Italy, designed to recycle and produce green energy. For 20 years, it’s been Peccioli’s most profitable business.

So when a group of young scientists from a nearby university in Pisa called Peccioli’s city hall and asked for permission to run a robotics test, all they had to do was say the magic word: trash.

During a recent test-run at Peccioli’s main terrace, the future of garbage collection zoomed in on two wheels, rounded and shiny, devoid of arms, and with two big round inspiring eyes.

Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of “Green Lantern,” getting the starring role in Warner Bros.' live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.

Martin Campbell will direct. The studio is still working on the picture’s budget, but production is expected to begin in January.

The news caps off a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film. Reynolds followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy “The Proposal,” which crossed the $100 million mark this week.

Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.

Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald DeLine will produce with Berlanti. Reynolds’ reps at UTA are working out his deal.

The actor will next star in “Buried,” a dark indie drama that will begin filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will play a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn’t know where he’s buried in the desert.

#57: "Chosen by a Horse" by Susan Richards

  • Jul. 10th, 2009 at 6:43 PM
This is an approachable and fast memoir that most any animal lover would enjoy. Susan Richards had a lot of baggage, but by the time she entered her 40s she regarded herself as an independent woman in control of her life. She had conquered the alcohol addiction that dominated her for decades. She shed an abusive husband and family. But when she agreed to take care of an abused mare and foal, she got more than she bargained for. The mare, Lay Me Down, had every right to hate humans, but she didn't. She looked on Susan with trust and faith, and Susan felt her old protective barriers begin to fall. But barriers exist with a reason, and soon Susan would need to face the truth: with love comes vulnerability, but it is still worthwhile.

I was surprised at how gently this book flowed. It felt like stream-of-consciousness, progressing from memory to memory without me even fully realizing how far the story strayed. Susan had a very difficult life, and she is very honest about what she endured and also what she brought on herself. Her relationship with Lay Me Down and other horses, even the impetuous Morgan Georgia, reveal a lot about her and her maturity. This is really a book about love, life, death, and how a person is never to old to learn and grow wise.

Earlier this week, the blonde pop duo Aly & AJ announced that they had changed their name to 78violet. (”Fyi…..u pronounce #78violet as seventy eight violet:),” they helpfully added.) The sisters are calling their renaming “an exciting new beginning,” although given that they’ve already achieved some chart success under their old name, one wonders if this change might hurt their fledgling pop career more than it helps. As a way to assist these young ladies through this crucial stage in their career, Idolator presents a few stories of artists who changed their names—and how their careers fared once all the paperwork with the local DMV had been signed.

THE OLD NAME: Green Jellö.
THE NEW NAME: Green Jellÿ (but it’s pronounced “green jello”).
THE REASONING: Let’s just say that Jell-O makers Kraft Foods weren’t so keen on their signature gelatin being branded with the gross-out rockers, who came to fame in the early ’90s with their retelling of the old fairy tale “Three Little Pigs.”

THE RESULT: The band kept at it after “Pigs,” opening an audio-visual production agency and covering Gary Glitter’s “Leader Of The Gang” with Hulk Hogan. After splitting up in 1995, they returned in 2008 for a brief roll in the reunion-tour mud.

THE OLD NAME: John Cougar.
THE NEW NAMES: John Cougar Mellencamp; John Mellencamp.
THE REASONING: Flush from the success of “Jack & Diane,” John managed to get enough clout to force his record label to re-add his surname to his feline stage name, which he claimed was forced on him by the suits. He eventually dropped the “Cougar” for good in 1991.
THE RESULT: His songs from all three eras are still ubiquitous on classic-rock radio, which is a sign that when one fights authority, authority might not always win.

Check out this sexy new shot of Make Me A Supermodel alum Jonathan Waud promoting the NOH8 campaign, which seeks to overturn the California Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the ban on same-sex unions.

“I think marriage is a beautiful expression of love between two people so how could anyone wish to limit that,” the 26-year-old British model tells JustJared.com. “I feel anyone should have the right to get married. Gay/straight should never be a point of consideration, it should simply be based on the love between two people. It sounds cheesy I know but how could anyone have a negative view of two people wanting to unite themselves for life. NOH8 helps give people a voice to show their support.”

Beth Ditto, the plus-sized singer with a personality to match, is about to launch a fashion line made exclusively for women sizes 10-28.

She's best known as the lead singer for indie-rock band Gossip, but recently the voluptuous rocker burst onto scene when she posed naked on the launch cover of Love magazine in February. She's been spotted recently cavorting in fashion circles with the likes of model Kate Moss.

The singer has designed a line of clothing for the UK-based, plus-sized line Evans, owned by Arcadia Group Limited. The group also owns hip retail giant TopShop. According to fashion blog JCreport.com, Evans has struggled with sales -- and style, for that matter - and brought Ditto on to spice things up.

The outspoken Ditto got the gig when TopShop asked her to make a few in-store appearances; a request Ditto refused.

"Give me the job. I want to design, I want you to make clothes for big girls, big boys. I want you to make big sizes," Ditto told British magazine NME.

Ditto designed the line drawing from her own sense of style: punk rock and bright colors. The line includes vintage-inspired dresses, cropped jackets, and brightly colored leggings.

The line hits UK stores on July 9, but will only be available in the U.S. online at Evans.co.uk
